Why fall is the best time for family photos in southern Utah

Every season has something beautiful to offer in southern Utah. But fall? Fall is something else entirely.

‍ ‍

There's a reason my calendar fills up faster in autumn than any other time of year — and it's not just because of the colors, though those are reason enough. It's the light, the temperature, the landscapes, and the way everything comes together in a way that simply doesn't happen the rest of the year. If you've been on the fence about booking a session, here's why fall in southern Utah is worth getting off that fence for.

‍ ‍

The light is different

Golden hour in fall hits differently than it does in summer. The sun sits lower in the sky, which means the warm, soft, directional light that photographers dream about lasts longer and starts earlier. Instead of a narrow 20-minute window right before sunset, fall gives us a longer stretch of genuinely beautiful light to work with. For families with young kids who can't always time a perfectly timed golden hour arrival, that extra margin makes a real difference.

‍ ‍

The temperatures are finally comfortable

Southern Utah summers are stunning but brutal — triple-digit heat makes outdoor sessions uncomfortable for everyone, especially kids. Fall brings the kind of temperatures that let everyone actually relax and enjoy the session rather than wilting in the heat or squinting into harsh midday light. Comfortable families photograph beautifully. Hot, tired, squinting families do not.

‍ ‍

That said, fall mornings and evenings — especially at higher elevations — can get genuinely chilly. Layering is your friend, and I always help clients plan for this during our styling consultation so everyone stays comfortable throughout the session.

‍ ‍

The landscapes are doing something extraordinary

Southern Utah's fall color story is unlike anywhere else because of its dramatic elevation changes. In the same season you can photograph against golden aspen groves at Cedar Mountain and Pine Valley, rabbit brush blooming in bright yellow clusters across the St. George desert floor, deep red cottonwoods along the Virgin River corridor at Grafton and Zion, and eventually the rich warm tones of St. George and Hurricane as November settles in.

‍ ‍No other season gives you this much variety across this many different landscapes — all within an hour or two of St. George.

‍ ‍

The red rock gets richer

Something that surprises a lot of people: the red rock of Snow Canyon and Sand Hollow actually photographs richer and deeper in fall than it does in summer. The lower angle of fall light catches the texture and color of the sandstone differently, bringing out warm tones that feel almost cinematic without any extra editing. Pair that with a family in deep burgundy, forest green, or dusty teal and you have the kind of portrait that stops people mid-scroll.

‍ ‍

It's the season people actually display

Think about what happens with family photos. Most families want portraits for holiday cards, for wall art, for gifts to grandparents — and all of those things happen in the fall and winter. Booking your session in autumn means your gallery is ready when you actually need it, rather than scrambling to use summer portraits for a December card.

‍ ‍

It fills up faster than any other season

This is the honest, practical reality: fall is my most requested season by a significant margin. Families who wait until September to book often find that the best October and November dates are already gone. If fall portraits are on your list for this year, the best time to claim your date is now — before the season you're hoping to shoot in is fully booked.

Every session type shines in fall

Whether you're booking a Cinematic Family Portrait session, an Extended Family gathering, an Everyday Magic children's session, or a creative whimsical Imagine Portraits experience — fall in southern Utah elevates all of it. The color, the light, and the landscape do a significant portion of the work, so what we capture together feels genuinely extraordinary rather than just pretty.

‍ ‍

If you've been waiting for the right time, this is it.

Book your fall session here— and let's make something beautiful together before the season slips away.
