The best fall photo locations in southern Utah
Southern Utah has no shortage of stunning backdrops year-round — but autumn transforms this landscape into something truly extraordinary. Golden aspens, blooming rabbit brush, golden orange cottonwoods, crimson ornamental pears, and rich red rock all exist within an hour or two of St. George, making this one of the most diverse and photogenic fall regions in the entire country.
Here's a deeper look at my favorite fall photo locations across southern Utah, what makes each one special, and which session types work best where.
Cedar Mountain
Cedar Mountain is where autumn arrives first in southern Utah, typically peaking in the last week of September. The aspen groves here turn a deep, saturated gold that photographs beautifully in the soft morning light filtering through the trees. It's a quieter, more secluded feel than some of the busier parks — which means less foot traffic and more room to move freely during a session.
This location works beautifully for all session types, but it's particularly magical for Imagine Portraits — the dense forest canopy and dappled light create a naturally enchanted backdrop that needs very little creative direction to feel like something straight out of a fairy tale.
Best for: Cinematic Family Portraits, Imagine Portraits, Everyday Magic Peak timing: Mid to late September
Pine Valley
Pine Valley offers a completely different fall feel from Cedar Mountain — rather than open aspen groves, this is a dense pine forest with splashes of golden and russet color woven through the deep evergreen. The overall look is warm, woodsy, and richly autumnal even without the wall-to-wall leaf color you'd find at higher aspen elevations. It's quieter and more intimate than some of the busier locations, with a natural moody quality that requires very little creative direction to feel like something from a fairy tale or a storybook.
For families who want a fall session that feels deeply forested and atmospheric rather than classically golden, Pine Valley is one of my favorite choices in the region.
Best for: Cinematic Family Portraits, Imagine Portraits, Everyday Magic Peak timing: Late September into early October
Kolob Canyons & Kolob Terrace
The upper elevations of Kolob offer some of the most dramatic fall color in Washington County — deep reds and oranges mixed with gold, set against the signature red rock of the Zion area. The color here tends to linger a little longer than Cedar Mountain, giving a slightly wider shooting window in early October.
Sessions here require a bit more hiking and planning than lower-elevation locations, but the payoff is extraordinary — especially for families who want something genuinely epic and off the beaten path.
Best for: Cinematic Family Portraits, Imagine Portraits Peak timing: Early to mid October
Grafton Ghost Town
Grafton is one of those locations that feels like it was made for photography. An abandoned 19th century pioneer settlement sitting along the Virgin River, with red rock cliffs rising behind it and cottonwood trees lining the riverbank — in autumn those cottonwoods turn a warm golden orange that contrasts beautifully against the red and ochre tones of the old buildings and surrounding landscape.
This is a favorite for families who want something with real character and history, not just a pretty backdrop. It photographs equally well for moody cinematic family portraits, whimsical Imagine Portraits concepts, and intimate children's portrait sessions.
Best for: Cinematic Family Portraits, Imagine Portraits, Everyday Magic Peak timing: Mid to late October
Zion National Park
Zion in autumn is breathtaking — the cottonwoods along the Virgin River turn a warm golden orange while the canyon walls stay their signature deep red, creating a color contrast that's hard to match anywhere else. Sessions inside the park require permits for commercial photography, so planning ahead is essential, but for destination families the result is absolutely worth it.
This is one of my top recommendations for destination clients specifically — there are very few places in the world where you can get this combination of ancient red rock and vivid fall color in a single frame.
Best for: Cinematic Family Portraits, Destination sessions, Imagine Portraits, Everyday Magic Peak timing: Mid to late October
Snow Canyon State Park
Snow Canyon doesn't offer traditional fall foliage the way higher elevations do, but it has two things going for it in autumn that make it one of my most-used fall locations: the rabbit brush blooms in bright yellow clusters through September and early October, and the lower angle of fall light hits the red and white sandstone in a way that brings out rich, warm tones that simply don't exist in summer light.
Worth noting for St. George area sessions specifically: the ornamental pear trees planted throughout the city and surrounding neighborhoods turn a stunning deep crimson in late October and November — a bold, saturated color that photographs beautifully and adds a completely different fall feel than the golden tones you'd find at higher elevations. These trees are easy to overlook but genuinely stunning for portraits when they're at their peak.
For families who want that quintessential southern Utah red rock look with a fall feel, Snow Canyon in September or October is a beautiful choice — especially paired with the warm color palette recommendations we covered in the what to wear post.
Best for: All session types Peak timing: September through November (year-round location, best fall light in October-November)
Tonaquint Nature Center
By December, most of the vivid color has faded — but Tonaquint Nature Center in St. George offers something different and equally beautiful: soft earthy tones, dried grasses, plants with fluffy white seed heads catching the winter light, and a quiet, dreamy quality that feels like the gentle end of a story. It's a location I return to every late autumn for its uniquely still and contemplative atmosphere.
Best for: Everyday Magic, Imagine Portraits, intimate family sessions Peak timing: Late November through early December
A note on timing and booking
Every one of these locations has its own narrow window — and fall fills my calendar faster than any other season. If you have a specific location or timing in mind, reaching out early is the best way to make sure we can make it happen.
