Back to school is just around the corner—can you believe how fast summer flies? Between popsicles, pool days, and desert heat in the triple digits (I’m definitely ready for cooler autumn weather!), this time of year always sneaks up on us.

To celebrate the new school year, I did a vintage-inspired back-to-school portrait session featuring two sweet girls wearing handmade outfits I sewed up! One wore a bright and cheerful yellow, the other a light purple—both dresses full of retro charm and classic childhood magic.

Vintage Little Lady Patterns & Handmade Outfits

At the time of this shoot, I was also working as a pattern tester for Vintage Little Lady Patterns, and they had just released the sweetest vintage back-to-school designs. I couldn’t wait to sew them up and photograph them in a way that showed off both the details of the patterns and the personalities of these two beautiful girls.

Some of the images from this session lean more toward product photography, which I also love doing. Capturing the textures, stitching, and movement of handmade clothing adds a whole other layer to children’s portraits—and gives your hard work (or mine!) the spotlight it deserves.
