Find the Magic Photo Hunt — 50 prompts to capture the magic of Autumn

2026 Autumn Photo Inspiration Challenge

There is something about autumn that makes even the most ordinary moments feel like they belong in a story. The way light filters gold through changing leaves. The smell of crisp air and wood smoke. The sound of boots crunching through leaves on a quiet morning. It's a season that practically begs to be photographed — and this list is your invitation to do exactly that.

‍ ‍

Whether you're picking up your camera for the first time or simply looking for a reason to slow down and notice the beauty happening right outside your door, the Find the Magic Photo Hunt Autumn Edition is for you. Fifty prompts. No rules. No pressure. Just you, your camera, and a season full of moments worth holding onto.

How to use this list

There's no right or wrong way to approach these prompts. Work through them in order, pick the ones that call to you, or use the list as a loose guide when you're not sure what to shoot. Some are literal — pumpkin means find a pumpkin and photograph it. Others are open to interpretation — cozy might mean a child wrapped in a blanket, a steaming mug on a porch railing, or a dog curled up in a pile of leaves.

The goal isn't technical perfection. The goal is to start seeing autumn the way it deserves to be seen — slowly, intentionally, and with wonder.

A few simple tips before you start

Find beautiful light. One of the things that makes autumn such a magical season to photograph is that the light is softer and warmer throughout the entire day — not just at golden hour. Unlike the harsh midday light of summer, autumn light tends to be gentler from morning through evening. That said, the best light is whatever light moves you. Step outside at different times of day, look for the way light falls through the trees or catches the color of the leaves, and trust your own eye. If it looks beautiful to you, photograph it.

  • Get low. Drop to a child's eye level, get close to the ground, shoot through a pile of leaves — changing your angle changes everything. Some of the most stunning autumn images are taken from unexpected vantage points.

  • Let the season do the work. Autumn is already extraordinary. Your job is simply to point your camera at it and pay attention.

  • Embrace the imperfect moments. A child mid-jump into a leaf pile, a scarf blowing in the wind, foggy breath on a cold morning — these unplanned moments are often the most beautiful ones.

Share your magic

When you capture something you love using this list, share it on Instagram and tag it #FindTheMagicPhotoHunt — I'd love to see what autumn looks like through your lens. Every season I add a new list, and that hashtag is where our growing community of mothers finding their creative eye comes together.

And whenever you capture a magical moment — whether it's from this list or just an ordinary autumn afternoon that suddenly turned extraordinary — tag it #MomsCapturingMagic too. That's our evergreen community space for mothers who are learning to see the beauty in the everyday moments only they get to witness.

One last thing ‍

Autumn is fleeting. The leaves that are golden today will be gone next week. The fog that sits in the valley on a quiet Tuesday morning won't be there tomorrow. The child jumping in that pile of leaves is a little bit bigger than they were last autumn, and next year they'll be bigger still.

Pick up your camera. Go outside. Find the magic before the season slips away.

Want to learn how to use your camera to its full potential so you can capture these moments the way you see them in your mind?
